Hysteria2 on iOS in FollowNet: when lossy networks need a different path
Why FollowNet ships Hysteria2 alongside WireGuard, IKEv2, and AmneziaWG — and when Smart Connect should pick it.
The problem Hysteria2 targets
Some paths are lossy, heavily shaped, or hostile to classic VPN signatures. WireGuard and IKEv2 remain excellent defaults, but they are not always the protocol that survives a bad hotel uplink or a carrier that fights UDP-heavy tunnels.
How it fits the FollowNet stack
FollowNet is still a conventional iOS VPN: Network Extension, account login, Free weekly limit, Premium for unlimited. Hysteria2 is another selectable protocol next to WireGuard, IKEv2, and AmneziaWG.
Manual pick vs Smart Connect
If you know a network kills WireGuard, try Hysteria2 or AmneziaWG manually in Settings → Protocol. Otherwise leave Smart Connect on and let it weigh conditions. Use Speed Test after each switch; “feels faster” without numbers wastes Free quota.
What success looks like
Success is a boring green connected state for browsing, messaging, and streaming — not a protocol trophy. If Hysteria2 underperforms on your home fiber, go back to WireGuard. Protocol choice is a tool, not an identity.
