How a VPN works on iPhone — tunnel, protocols, DNS

FollowNet builds a Network Extension tunnel, encrypts packets to a VPN server, then the server fetches the internet on your behalf. Protocol choice (WireGuard, VLESS Reality, …) changes how that tunnel looks on hostile networks.

What to know

Three layers matter day to day: (1) the tunnel protocol, (2) which server exit you use, (3) which DNS resolver answers names while connected. Smart Connect can change (1); Network Profiles can set all three in one tap.

How to use it

Connect once, open Settings → Protocol to see Smart vs manual, run Speed Test, and try Fastest vs a Specific city. On Chrome the “tunnel” is a browser proxy — other desktop apps stay outside.

Limits and honest expectations

Encryption stops at the VPN server egress. Sites still see the server’s IP. Captive portals must be completed before the tunnel stays up.
